DESCRIPTION: Taken on January 14, 2009 this Superior Mirage is an atmospheric phenomena not seen very often. This photo is of Lion Rock and Diablo Canyon Power Plant taken from Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve. That's about 25 miles away. Superior Mirages are very rare and as you can see it has skewed the horizon in about four different areas. Lion Rock is normally round on top and now looks like an iceberg. Even the ridge line is skewed in different spots almost half way up the mountain. I sent this to the National Weather Service and they were just as surprised to see this as I was. Being a weather nut I am glad to have captured this atmospheric phenomena as I may never see it again.
